“Biggest Selection Shock in NSW Origin Opener: Koroisau Surprises as Hooker!”

In a surprising selection move, Api Koroisau hasbeen chosen over Damien Cook for the hooking role in the New South Wales (NSW) State of Origin series opener. NSW coach Brad Fittler made the decision based on Koroisau’s previous connection with his former Penrith teammates, breaking away from the two-hooker model used in the previous series. Additionally, Fittler announced that Nicho Hynes and Hudson Young would make their debuts for the Blues, with Hynes expected to serve as a utility player on the bench.

Tom Trbojevic, who showcased an impressive performance with three tries for Manly, secured his spot as a center, while his brother Jake withdrew, making way for Tevita Pangai Jr. to join the team. Josh Addo-Carr has also returned to the NSW squad after recovering from an injury. Fittler has also chosen Tyson Frizell, who last played for NSW in 2020, to be part of the lineup.

Fittler contemplated the possibility of including Jack de Belin, who had been on a representative exile, but ultimately decided against it. De Belin, who faced sexual assault charges, was found not guilty of one charge, and the remaining charges were not pursued by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Although de Belin expressed his desire to return to the NSW team, Fittler opted for a more experienced side.

The selection of Koroisau, Hynes, and Young demonstrates Fittler’s confidence in their abilities and highlights the depth of talent in NSW rugby league. The series opener is scheduled for May 31 in Adelaide, and the NSW team is expected to put up a strong performance.
