Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a statement during the Group of Seven summit in Japan, revealing that the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine had been seized by the forces of the Wagner private army with the support of Russian troops. Zelenskyy acknowledged that the city had fallen and expressed his belief that there was nothing left, as the Russians had reportedly destroyed everything. He stated that for now, Bakhmut only existed in their hearts.
The Russian defense ministry released a statement on their Telegram channel, confirming the capture of Bakhmut by the Wagner private army, which was followed by a similar claim made by Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin. However, Ukrainian authorities had initially stated that the fighting for Bakhmut was ongoing.
President Joe Biden, who was present alongside Zelenskyy at the summit, announced additional aid for Ukraine amounting to $375 million. This assistance included ammunition, artillery, and vehicles.
The battle for Bakhmut has been the longest and bloodiest conflict in Ukraine, spanning eight months. Despite Russia’s victory in capturing the city, analysts believe that it is unlikely to significantly impact the overall course of the war.
